The School Foundation mourns the loss of Senator Hugh K. Leatherman Sr.
The School Foundation extends its condolences to the family of S.C. Senator Hugh K. Leatherman Sr., who died recently at the age of 90. Senator Leatherman was committed to improving the education for Florence’s youngest children and was instrumental in securing funds from the state for Florence 1 Schools’ five-year early education childhood program. This program continues to serve as a pilot for all of South Carolina.
“As a legislator, businessman, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Senator Hugh Leatherman understood the value of good parenting and quality early childhood experiences,” stated Dr. Floyd Creech. “He continuously supported the early education efforts of The School Foundation and Florence 1 Schools both personally and through his local and state influence. He often stated that early education was the key to better education systems and building good communities. His efforts will be missed but should serve as inspiration for all South Carolinians.
“Senator Leatherman’s impact on the state of South Carolina was far reaching,” stated Debbie Hyler, Executive Director of the foundation. “We have lost a great leader who spent his entire political career serving our state and community. Our staff and board of directors extend their deepest sympathies to his wife, Jean, and his entire family.”
Jean Leatherman is a founding member of the foundation and has worked tirelessly to promote the education of the students in Florence 1 Schools. She is a tremendous asset to our board and the 16,000 students we serve.
